Sarah Smith (b.1990) is from a small town in Southeastern New Mexico. She grew up on a sheep ranch working along side her family growing wool. Smith is very proud of the work ethic and animal handling skills learned on the ranch. In 2008 Smith moved to New York to attend Parsons School of Design, where she graduated in 2012 with a BFA in communication design.
After graduating from Parsons, Smith went on to apprentice at The Center For Book Arts in Manhattan, as well as various other fine art print shops in New York City. After completing apprenticeships to hone her bookmaking and printing skills, Smith went on to work as a bookbinder and studio manager for Small Editions in Brooklyn, NY from 2013 – 2019. In those six years with Small Editions she editioned small runs of handmade books, designed books for clients, and designed + constructed custom structures for their publishing program. Books she helped create are in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, Walker Art Center, Whitney Museum of American Art, and The New York Public Library.
The Center for Book Arts in New York, NY was integral to building Smith’s foundation in the book arts community post grad. In 2016, CBA invited her to become a teacher, where she currently conducts classes. Additionally she has taught at Printed Matter and Cooper Union.
Smith has been a printer at Harlan & Weaver in New York, NY since 2015. The shop is a fine art intaglio printshop that has been a staple of the independent print publishing community in NYC for over 35 years. Here, Smith and Master Printer, Felix Harlan, collaborate with artists to create plates and editions. She has also worked with other print shops in New York such as Pace Prints, LeRoy Neiman Print Center, and 10 Grand Press.
With her knowledge of fine art printmaking, object making, and graphic design, Sarah Smith founded Stock Pile, a book making studio specializing in contemporary artist books, boxes, prints and design.
